Problem of the day 14 Sep 2011

3 men -A,B and C played a Dart game.

1.Each of the dart lodged in the game board scored 1,5,10,25,50, or 100 points.
2.Each man threw 9 darts that lodged in the board.
3.Each man's total score was the same as any other man's total score.
4.No number of points scored by a dart was scored by more than 1 man.
5.A scored all the 5s and B scored all the 10s.

Who scored all the 100's?

1) A           2) B                   3) C      4) Cannot be determined

  1. well option 2
    B wld get all the hundreds as well..

    realise that since we have '1' as one of the possible values...means the total must be having a 5 at the end
    and moreover it shld be havinf a group of 5(1s)
    total wld be 225 each

  5. @Apurv

    The hint is one player gets all 5
    another gets all 10s

    and each of them gets the same total

    and no two persons hit the same things

    Now someone hits a 100, the moment he hits a 100, the gap between others is huge..

    Also whoever hits 1, needs to hit 5 1s .. Hence he we are reasonably sure of the number being 225..

    So just thinking of a few numbers like 125, 150.. etc I got 225

    which was then cakewalk.. needed a bit of number crunching and smart guessing

  6. hmmm........

    one does agree that each of A B C must have atleast 1 point number and at max 3 diff point numbers

    now said that, also realise that the group of 5(1s) can only go to either B or C...... and more over where this goes... 25 wld go to the other person.
    now we knw the sum has to end in 5
    so A wld score only odd multp of 5

    using same logic.person to score 25 wld also score 25 an odd numer of times..

    see that by using 5(1s) no matter who i give them to, tht person can use only remainging 4 shots, cause in all he has only 9 darts.

    use this and the fact of odd number of 25's

    u wld realise 25 shld be alone ...to give 225..
    A = five 5s , four 50s
    B= five 1s,two hundreds , two tens
    C= nine 25s
