Problem of the Day 20th Sept 2011

Brenda and Sally run in opposite directions on a circular track, starting at diametrically opposite points. They first meet after Brenda has run 100 meters. They next meet after Sally has run 150 meters past their first meeting point. Each girl runs at a constant speed. What is the length of the track in meters?

(a) 200   (b) 300 (c) 350  (4) 550

  3. Solution..

When they meet for the first time Brenda and Sally travel half the track. Brenda has walked 100 meters.

When they meet for the second time Brena dna Sally together travel the full track. Hence, as speed is constant, Brenda travels 200 meters. And since Sally has travelled 150 m since the first meet.

    The total distance is 200+150=350

hence, the length of track is 350!
